China Suspends 300 Fishing Website Domain Names

By October 30, 2008, the Anti Fishing Alliance of China had suspended the domain names of more than 300 Chinese fishing websites with the help of the anti fishing system based on the .CN domain names.

Fishing websites have been threatening the Internet’s security, particularly since the second half of September when the financial crisis was expanding around the world. The rise of a large number of fishing websites seriously blocked the development of e commerce and online financial businesses. With this in mind, APAC established an anti fishing coordination mechanism, which ensures the safety and healthy development of e commerce and online financial services, and also raises the security of .CN domain names.

The Chinese Domain Registry is committed to fighting fishing websites in e commerce and online financial services, which are the sectors mostly harmed by fishing websites. Since its founding in July 2008, APAC has played an important role in clearing the Chinese Internet of miscreants.

At present, 42 Chinese and foreign companies have joined the alliance, covering such sectors as the Internet finance, securities, e commerce and online games. To date, there are more than 12 million .CN registered domain names in the world.

New .CM Domain Extensions

New domain extensions have been liberated today: COM.CM, NET.CM and CO.CM.

As from October 15, 2008 until October 31, 2008, holders of trademarks in Cameroon will have preference to apply for the correspondent domain name.

After this period, there will be a challenge stage, where all requested domains will be published and any party who believes has rights over any of those domains, may appeal.

Finally, on November 15, 2008 registrations will be opened to general public on a first come first serve basis. Applications will be handled by Cameroon Domain Authority.

.BG Lowers Requirements for Domain Registration

Bulgarian Domain Authority has extended the possibilities for domain name registration in the .bg zone, allowing registering domain names without providing evidence of the trademark ownership.

This could be an excellent opportunity for expanding domain protection, registering terms that are similar to your trademark. For example, if your trademark is Trademark and your domain is trademark.bg, you could now apply for my trademark.bg, etc.

New .BR Extensions Available

The Brazilian Domain Authority has recently lowered the requirements for the registration of AM.br, FM.br and TV.br domain names; these extensions, which were previously reserved only for companies in the areas of radio and television, but are now available for open registration to all established companies and organizations in Brazil.

Marcaria.com can provide the local presence requirement in Brazil, allowing for the registration of AM.br, FM.br and TV.br domain names, just like for COM.br domains, at no extra cost.

This is an opportunity to expand domain and trademark protection in Brazil. Moreover, these extensions can be used for marketing purposes, by combining different domain names with the AM.br, FM.br and TV.br extensions.

More Than 100,000 .BR Domains Have Became Available

The Brazilian Domain Authority has made available more than 100,000 popular domain names for registration by any eligible registrants. You may find a complete list of these domains here.

According to the rules of the Domain Authority, if the same domain is requested by two companies, preference will be given to the company that has identification and a trademark registered in Brazil.

Marcaria.com can provide the local presence requirement in Brazil, allowing for the registration of .br domain names, at no extra cost.

.AR Introduces Local Characters

The Argentinean Domain Authority has started the priority period for the registration of com.ar domain names with local (Spanish and Portuguese) characters. It is now possible to reserve your equivalent com.ar domains with these characters at Marcaria.com.

From now, until December 16 2008, all persons or entities that have registered a com.ar domain before July 31 2008 will have the opportunity to reserve their equivalent domain containing Spanish and Portuguese characters:

“á” “â” “ã” “à ”

“é” “ê” “è”

“í” “ì”

“ó” “ô” “õ” “ò”

“u” “ü”

“ñ”

“ç”

will be convertible from the letters:

“a”

“e”

“i”

“o”

“u”

“n” “nh” “ni” “nn” “ny” “gn”

“c” “s”

For example, if you registered the domain papa.com.ar prior to July 31 2008, you may now apply for the domain pap¡.com.ar.

After priority period, which will last from December 17 2008 until March 16 2009, the Authority will process and approve the applications. After that, domains with local characters will be available for registration to the general public.

If more than one application for the same domain is received, the registrant of the oldest equivalent domain will be granted the domain.

By applying for domains with local characters domain protection is expanded. Also, it is possible to transmit the real meaning of the domain name and is a better way to reach Spanish and Portuguese speaking users.

Rules for .BR Domain Registration

According to the .BR Domain Authority:

Registration

Any entity legally established in Brazil as a corporate entity or individual that counts with a contract in national territory can register a .br domain name. Also, foreign businesses that count with an attorney legally established in Brazil.

Note that .br domain name reservations cannot be made; these are exclusive prerogatives of the Domain Authority.

Domain’s name modification does not exist either. You must request the cancellation of the domain that you do not want and request the registration of the new domain.

It is important to know that if some party registers a domain in any particular category, another entity can register the same domain in another category.

It is not allowed to transfer domains between “Individuals” and “Corporate Entities” categories and vice versa. The only exceptions are domains .com.br, which may be registered by individuals or corporate entities.

Domain contacts

There are 4 contacts: entity contact, administrative contact, technical contact and payment contact.

The entity contact is responsible for the maintenance and update of the entity’s information, registration of new domains and transfer of contacts from domains held by the same. The administrative contact may alter information of DNS servers and transfer technical and payment contacts. The technical contact can modify DNS servers. The payment contact aims to provide the email address where to send the invoice. (*If the entity and domains are not managed by a Service Provider).

Syntax

The characters that can be accentuated are all vowels and the cedilla (ç), according to the Portuguese Language rules:

à, á, â, ã, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ, ú, ü, ç

There are two situations in which it would be advisable to register accentuated domains: first, in cases where the absence of accent alters the meaning or gives the domain a pejorative connotation. And second: you may register domains with and without accent and redirect them towards a unique address, in order to attract the target audience. Many businesses register domains with and without hyphen with the same aim. Meanwhile, no business is obliged or driven to register both versions of the domain, since the registration of one of them ensures that no other entity can register the other version.

If you register a domain without accentuation and/or cedilla (ç), the system will not convert it automatically to accentuated version. The user that wants to use a domain with accent and/or cedilla (ç) should register it.

A domain with accent and/or cedilla (ç) can be registered only by the same entity that owns the equivalent domain without accent and/or cedilla (ç).

If the domain is registered with accent and/or cedilla (ç) the email address will also present the accentuated domain. The accentuation possibility in a username (ex: josé@xxxx.com.br) must be verified with the email server administrator.
