New York Plan to Seek .NYC Web Address

New York City has become the first American city to openly state it will seek a generic Top Level Domain. The City of New York will seek the .NYC gTLD working with dotNYC LLC, a private company that for the last year has been meeting with city officials about the plan for the .NYC web address.

ICANN, which has just released Version Three of its New gTLD Applicant Guidebook, is likely to call for applications for new gTLDs in 2010. While early 2010 was the date being aimed for by ICANN it is likely the date when applications will be called for will be pushed back to later in the year. There are still a number of contentious issues including security and protection for trademark holders that are to be finalized.

The Guidebook has been changed significantly and the changes will be discussed at the ICANN meeting in Seoul in late October. As indicated by ICANN Chief Operating Officer, Doug Brent, “this third version of draft guidebook represents months of outstanding effort by many in the ICANN community working to resolve the few, challenging remaining issues. This version is being released with materials that describe how public comment has influenced the changes presented in it.”

The .NYC proposal has gained the support of several prominent New York identities including former Mayor Ed Koch, who supports the dotNYC effort to operate .NYC on the city’s behalf: “.NYC is the best real estate deal since the Dutch bought Manhattan,” Koch said.

.MX Domain Registration in Mexico

Since September 2009 registration of .mx domains (i.e. domain.mx) is be open to general public. Domains will be assigned in the same order the applications are received by the Registry.

.MX Registration Open to General Public

Starting Tuesday, September 1st, registration of .mx domains (i.e. domain.mx) will be open to general public. Domains will be assigned in the same order the applications are received by the Registry.

The initial registration fee for .mx domains will be USD 600 for the first year. And from November 1st, the registration and renewal fee will drop to USD 35.

.MX Exceeds 300,000 Domain Registrations

Mexico Domain Registry has announced that the 300,000 .MX registered domains figure has been exceeded (includes .com.mx, .net.mx, .org.mx, .edu.mx, .gob.mx and .mx classifications). To date, Mexico Domain Registry reaches 308,586 registered domains.

Nowadays, counting with more than 300,000 registered domains shows the strong growth of the industry in Mexico; only in 2009 there have been more than 58,000 registration requests, considering that it took 15 years to reach the first 100,000 domains. This work has been possible through the joint effort of over 150 Accredited Registrars that besides of offering .MX domain registration, count with a variety of services and different packages to support those companies, partnerships and persons that want to have presence in the net.

The preference for .MX domain names is increasing since users, individuals and companies, acknowledge an added value in being able to identify themselves with Mexico in Internet and promote themselves worldwide, among other benefits.

Mexico Domain Registry reports to date the following percentages according to the different classifications:

  1. .com.mx: 86.96%
  2. .org.mx: 4.55%
  3. .edu.mx: 1.87%
  4. .gob.mx: 1.56%
  5. .net.mx: 0.14%
  6. .mx: 4.92%

Additional to the amount of domain names registered under .MX, the Registry reports to date more than 17,000 requests received since May 1 when the Re Open Process started for registration of domain names directly under .MX. This process is divided in 3 stages and the Pre Registration period ends on July 31, 2009.

.MX Pre-Registration Stage

In response to the interest of users to register domains directly under .mx, the authority has announced the release of its registration.

Registration directly under .mx offers important benefits for Internet users related to Mexico, such as registration of shorter names, the possibility of not restricting names to only one kind of organization, and the direct identification with Mexico in Internet, among others, this way allowing users to register domains like www.mycompany.mx.

There launch of .mx is planned in different stages:

  • Pre registration Period (May 1 to July 31, 2009):
  • Only holders of .com.mx, .net.mx, .org.mx, .edu.mx and .gob.mx domains may apply for the corresponding .mx domain name; for example, if you had registered store.com.mx you will be able to register store.mx. To be eligible, all registrants needed to have held a domain name under of the above sub domains before March 1, 2009. If two people request the same domain name the priority will be given to the person who has the registration under .com.mx, .net.mx, .org.mx, .edu.mx or .gob.mx for the longest period.

The applicant must have the .com.mx/.org.mx domain registered with Marcaria.com; otherwise he should transfer the domain to Marcaria.com. In order to proceed with the transfer the applicant should send us the transfer code before the Pre Registration Period ends (July 31, 2009).

You may pre register your .mx now by entering here

  • Waiting Period (August 1 to 31, 2009):
  • No new requests will be allowed, but the requests pending from the Pre registrations will be processed. All the domains requested and assigned will be activated at the end of this period. In case it is considered that the domain name was not assigned under the rules and policies of the Pre registration period, the owners could initiate a Process of not Approval of the Assigned domain name under .MX.

  • Initial Period of Registration (September 1 to October 31, 2009):
  • Registrations will be open to the public. Requests will be processed by order of arrival first come, first served.
There are some reserved domains which will not be able to be available for registration.
