Syntax Rules for Domain Names Under .LU

  1. Domain names must have a minimum length of 3 and up to 63 alphanumeric characters per name (a … z, 0 … 9).
  2. Only the hyphen ( ) is allowed as special character. The hyphen can only be used in between two characters and not as first or last character.
  3. Use only lower case characters, because domain names are case insensitive.

Register Requirements and Criteria Luxemburg

According to the .LU domain name policy, organization as well as natural persons may register domain names. You have to specify on the registration form whether the entity seeking registration is an organization or a natural person.

Any entity may become the holder of a domain name .LU., independent of its place of establishment.

A domain name can be registered as inactive domain name (reserved domain name) or as active domain name (network connection). Inactive domain names remain registered until you are ready for your Internet presence and have the domain name activated by a hosting provider.

All applications for new domain names are processed in chronological order of receipt, the domain names are allocated according to the principle “first come, first served”.

Reasons for rejecting domain name applications

Domain name applications which belong to one of the following categories are however rejected:

  • the domain name contains the name of any Luxembourg municipality or village, as indicated in the “Annuaire Officiel 1995 Vol. 2 Aper politique et localit’s du Grand Duch”, unless it is the local administration in question filling in the application form for its own name as a domain name
  • domain names which are identical to an already registered domain name, or which are identical to a previously applied valid domain name
  • domain names considered obviously to be contrary to public order or good morals.
