Register Requirements and Criteria Italy

Only individual and juridical persons residing in or belonging to a EU Member State can register domain names under the ccTLD “it”. Note that some European countries are not EU members, such as: Principality of Monaco, Vatican, San Marino, Andorra, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.

The domain registration documentation must be sent in Italian.

Domain names are assigned by the Registry to registrants on the basis of the requests chronological order of arrival, as defined by the Technical Registration Procedures

Domain names cannot be booked

A domain name assigned within the name space under the ccTLD “it” cannot be considered as prereserved in other positions of the same name tree.

The assignment procedure concludes when the domain name is loaded into the ANR. This is effected only once the Registry has received the requested documentation in full and the effective functionality of the name has been verified.

Annulment as a result of renunciation

Where annulment is a result of renunciation of the domain name on the part of the assignee the Registry is obliged to ensure the maintenance of the old domain name for a maximum period of six months, upon request of the assignee.

Official annulment

The Registry officially annuls the assignment of a domain name in the following cases:

  • shortcoming of the objective and subjective elements which have determined the assignment of a domain in the ccTLD “it”, where expected;
  • failure to present the documents requested by the Registry.
  • the non “visibility/accessibility”, for more than 3 months, of the objects belonging to the assigned domain name (or the non functioning of the authoritative name serves given into the technical registration form deposited into the ANR or their misconfiguration accordingly to the “Technical Registration Procedures” or the unreachability of the e mail address “postmaster@<registered domain name>.it”). The verification of the missing visibility/accessibility shall be technically made by Registry, by default or upon a third party written request. In this case the domain name cannot be reassigned to other individuals or organizations for one month from the annulment date.

Annulment in view of judicial sentence or arbitration decision

The Registry annuls the assignment of a domain name in view of a judicial sentence or arbitration decision which establishes that the assignee did not have rights to its use. A suspended domain name cannot be reassigned to other individuals or organizations unless and until annulled. A domain name annulled according to the circumstance described in the previous comma is immediately made available for assignment to registrants other that the previous assignee, except in the case of explicit indication to the contrary expressed within the judicial sentence or arbitration decision.

Documentation for the assignment of a domain name

The request for a new domain name is made by way of an electronic form containing the technical data necessary to its functionality and operation forwarded to the Registry by the provider/maintainer of the domain name and a predefined letter of assumption of responsibility forwarded by the domain name requester.

Assignment requests are only accepted by the Registry if accompanied by the above mentioned documentation, compiled in accordance with the relevant instructions.

Failure to present the requested documents

It is the faculty of the Registry to annul the assignment of the domain name where:

  • the documentation is not received by the Registry within the relevant deadline; or
  • the requester refuses to send the documentation; or
  • it emerges that the data provided by the requester do not correspond to the truth.

What does DNS mean?

This is an acronym, meaning DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM. A DNS manages the translation of a domain name into an IP number (the so called name resolution), and vice versa that of an IP number into a domain name (the so called inverse resolution).

No, it is forbidden by the Regulation.

How long can a domain name be?

The overall length of a domain name cannot exceed 255 characters. For example, the length of the domain name “duck.it” is 7 characters.

The maximum length of each component of a domain name (sequence of characters delimited by dots “.”) is 63 characters. For example, the domain name “donald.duck.it” is composed of 3 components: a first level component named “it” of 2 characters; a second level named “duck” of 4 characters and a third level named “donald” of 6 characters.

In domain names under the ccTLD “it”, the length of the second level component must be at least 3 characters.

When does a domain name expire?

A domain name registered under the ccTLD “it” expires after one year from the registration date (ex. a domain name registered on June 9, 2003 will expire on June 9, 2004), or from the date of the last change (the assignee of a domain name is changed, ex.: a domain name registered on June 30, 2002 by Donald Duck Ltd, afterwards transferred on February 1, 2003 to Mickey Mouse Corporation will expire on February 1, 2004).

A domain name is automatically renewed unless the assignee requires its cancellation from the Registry of Assigned Domain Names.

Should a domain name be put in the so called “NO PROVIDER MNT” status, according to art.3.2 of the Technical Registration Procedures, the domain name is cancelled after three months, unless the assignee decides to submit a request to change the provider/maintainer (from NO PROVIDER MNT to ………….. MNT ).

What does “NO PROVIDER” mean?

It is the status in which a domain name can be put when its provider/maintainer does not want to maintain it any longer or when the contract has not been renewed with Registry. At the end of this period, if the domain is still in a NO PROVIDER status, the domain is automatically cancelled by the ccTLD “.it” Registry.

How can the NO PROVIDER status be changed?

To change the NO PROVIDER MNT status, the admin c or the legal representative of the domain name assignee has to send in an application for a “change of provider/maintainer”, duly filled in and signed, specifying “NO PROVIDER MNT” as the old P/M and the name (“tag”) of the new P/M.

What procedures expire?

All pending operations in the domain name search database expire after ten working days from the latest generated event: registrations, changes of provider, changes of admin c, other changes, transfers (transfers following a reassignment procedure are not included; they expire after 30 days).
