According to ISNIC, the Oficial ccTLD Registry for Iceland Domain Registration, there are 30.000 .IS domains on the record. The ccTLD .IS is considered very small among Top Level Domains, but it is also one of the most secure ones (according to McAfee Security Report). Domestic Applicants
- All domestic legal entities registered with an Id. No. and name in the Public Register of Enterprises or the National Register of the Statistical Bureau of Iceland are eligible to apply for a domain according to these rules.
- A domestic applicant may register a unrestricted number of domains.
Foreign Applicants
- A foreign legal entity with no Icelandic Id. No. may apply for a domain on the basis of a registered trade mark which is already registered with the Icelandic Patent Office. Only one domain may be applied for on the basis of each trade mark. The trade mark must consist of letters and/or numerals exclusively. A foreign applicant shall specify an Icelandic agent as administrative contact for the domain.
- A foreign party holding an international legal status, or internationally regarded as having such a status may apply for one domain. Examples are foreign embassies, organizations constituted under international law and international sports federations. A foreign applicant shall specify an Icelandic agent as administrative contact for the domain.
Domain Registration
- The general rule for registrations of domains is “first come, first served”. This shall apply if there are two or more applications for the same domain and when both applicants meet the conditions established for the delegation.
- The Registry reserves the right to reject applications for domains if the conditions for the domain name are not observed or the name does not comply with the traditions and general rules of the Internet.
- The Registry can at any time request documents confirming that the applicant meets the conditions set with regard to the registration of domains.
- An applicant who registers a domain becomes the registrant of that domain in accordance with the Registry’s rules. The registrant is responsible for ensuring that the use of the domain is within the limits of Icelandic law as current at any time. The registrant is also responsible for the payment of any fees due regarding delegation and renewal of the domain.
- The registrant/domain holder is under obligation to comply with the decision of a special Board of Appeals for domains.
- The registrant/domain holder is under obligation to compensate the Registry for any damage that the use of the domain may cause the Registry.
- The Registry reserves the right to reject applications for the following domains which are marked reserved in the Registry: net.is, com.is, edu.is, gov.is, org.is, and int.is.
Cancellation of Domains
- The rights to a registered domain may be cancelled pursuant to the policies described in this document.
- The general rule is that use of a domain is valid for one year at a time. If the annual renewal fee has not been received by the domain’s expiration date the domain will be suspended by the Registry, that is, the delegation records for the domain are removed from the IS zone.
- If a domain is suspended for 60 days or more it is removed from the domain registry; the rights to the domain then become void and the domain becomes available for registration again.
- In the case a domain experiences technical problems, i.e. its nameservers are no longer connected, the domain is missing from the defined nameservers, the domain’s zone is improperly formatted in the delegated nameservers or otherwise fails to comply with the Registry’s technical requirements, a warning is issued to the administrative contact and the technical contact for the domain. If no heed has been taken of the warning within 60 days the domain is suspended.
- If a domain is suspended for 60 days or more it is removed from the domain registry; the rights to the domain become void and the domain becomes available for application again.
- The administrative contact for the domain can terminate the domain. Subsequent to the termination the domain is removed from the domain registry. The domain becomes available to applicants again.
- Rights to a domain become void if the Board of Appeals or an Icelandic court comes to the decision that another party than the registrant has greater rights to that domain.
- A registered custodian (ISP) may inform the Registry that he no longer services a particular domain (no longer holds the domain’s zone data). The Registry will the put that domain on hold pending redelegation to a new custodian by the domain’s registrant.
Can a foreigner register an .is domain?
Foreign registrants, who are not domiciled in Iceland, can register a .is domain on the basis of:
- Owning a registered trade mark with the Icelandic Patent Office. Only one domain may be registered on the basis of each trade mark. The trade mark must consist of letters or numerals exclusively. The registrant must specify a Icelandic agent administrative contact for the domain.
- Holding an international legal status or being internationally regarded as having such status. Examples are foreign embassies, organizations constituted under international law and international sports federations. The registrant must specify an Icelandic agent administrative contact for the domain.
In both cases the registrant should begin by contacting a agent which will in many cases administer the registration of a domain for foreign parties.
What does a “corresponding non IDN domain” mean to a IDN domain?
The corresponding non IDN domain is constructed from the IDN domain according to the following table:
- þ > th á > a à > i
- æ > ae é > e ó > o
- ö > o ý > y
- ð > d ú > u
