Residents of Romania and Bulgaria Can Register .eu Domain Names as of January 1, 2007

Since joining the EU, Romanian and Bulgarian residents can register .eu domain names like any other eligible party, i.e. anyone living in an EU member state. Registration of domains are possible since midnight of the 31st of December (New Years Eve).

Should the .EU Registry, in the course of its investigations, encounter domain names that were registered by Bulgarian and Romanian residents before January 1, 2007, i.e. before they became eligible to register .eu domain names, those names will be revoked in accordance with Public Policy Rules. The registrants will be informed of the revocation of their domain names via e mail.

Syntax Rules for Domain Names Under .EU

Domain names must meet a number of technical requirements:

  • minimum 2 characters among the letters “a to z”, the numbers “0 to 9″ and the hyphen ” “
  • maximum of 63 characters
  • must not begin or end with a hyphen
  • must not contain a hyphen ” ” on the 3rd and 4th position simultaneously.

  1. The Registry shall register domain names in the .eu through any accredited .eu Registrar requested by any:
    • Undertaking having its registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the Community, or
    • Organization established within the Community without prejudice to the application of national law, or
    • Natural person resident within the Community.

Who can register a .eu name?

The following categories of companies, organizations and individuals will be able to register a .eu domain:

  • Undertakings having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Community
  • Organizations established within the European Community without prejudice to the application of national law
  • Natural persons resident within the European Community.

.EU Reaches 3 Million Registrations

The European Union Domain Registry announced that more than three million .eu domain names have been registered.

The milestone was reached on January 11, 2009, three years and one month after the sunrise period for .eu commenced in December 2005. A resident of Germany registered the three millionth .eu domain name.

.eu offers 500 million Europeans in 27 countries a unique Internet identity. In 2008, this extension grew 10% (274,000 domain names). The highest growth was in Poland (69,000), Germany (50,000), France (49,000) and the Netherlands (43,000).
