Green Cross Supports .ECO Domain Name Initiative

Green Cross International, a global non profit with national organizations in over 30 countries, announced its intention to help support the launch of the .eco domain. Green Cross is the latest to join this group of environmental non profit organizations and charities supporting the Vancouver based Big Room Inc’s bid to host the Dot Eco domain name.

The Dot Eco initiative is to help implement good sustainable intentions, said Adam Koniuszewski, Chief Operating Officer of Green Cross International. I hope that the support of organizations like ours will ensure that Dot Eco is trustworthy and dedicated to preserving nature.

The Big Room Inc. application for the .eco extension has been developed along with an international team of advisors and investors with deep roots in sustainability, environmental and business communities.

The support by Green Cross International adds to the weight of voices in favor of our initiative, said Jacob Malthouse Co founder of Big Room Inc. A major systemic shift to a low carbon economy has already started. Monitoring this change in a reliable way is our goal. We are glad to have Green Cross join our Stakeholder Council.

Big Rooms .eco platform will place key environmental and sustainability information along side the technical information collected and stored when a web address is registered. The .eco system will display current, detailed eco information to anyone with a browser, anytime they need it, anywhere on the planet.

Big Room will submit its application for .eco when the application round for new gTLDs overseen by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) opens in the first quarter of 2010.

Up to a quarter of the revenue from every Dot Eco name sold will go to environmental and social causes that support a more sustainable world.

Go Live of .CM Delayed By Official Registry

The .CM Domain Registry announced the postponement of the public first come first served launch for the .CM domain name, originally due at August 1 .

Unrelated to the widely reported cable fault affecting Internet access in West Africa at present, the .CM Registry cited technical difficulties with their root name servers. The .CM Registry has currently postponed the launch until further notice.

South Africa Accounts for 60% of Africa’s Domain Registrations

South Africa accounts for around 60% of all domain name registrations on the African continent, while the remaining 50 or so countries account for the remaining 40%, according to a Biz Community report.

Of the 108 million registered domain names in the world, Africa accounts for less than one million of these, and South Africa has 492,164 registrations according to the report.

“‘Until we sort out the issue of infrastructures, including networks, regulations and broadband, as a continent we will always remain behind, [Vika Mpisane, GM of .za Domain Name Authority] added, citing the lack of political will as a fundamental obstacle, the report noted.

.CM: Go Live Phase Starts Tomorrow

This Tuesday, August 4 2009, starts the Go Live phase of .CM registration opening.

Registering a .CM helps you protect your name as it is considered to be a type of the .COM: when typing a .COM domain name people often forget to type in the .CM, which can cause a loss of traffic and also lead to a misleading use of the name if you are not the owner of the corresponding .CM name.

.CM is the country code top level domain (ccTLD) for the Republic of Cameroon. It is a significant extension as it covers the Central African region, which does not usually provide many domain names, so registering a .CM is also an opportunity to expand your portfolio in Africa.

Starting on August 4, 2009, .CM domains can be registered on a first come, first served basis. The registration cost will be USD 110 and the minimum registration term 1 year.
