900,000th .BE Domain Activated

On April 16, 2009, the registry for .BE domain names announced the 900,000th .BE domain name has been registered.

The 900,000th domain is artchaud.be, and it was reached within ten years of .BE domain names becoming available.

At the turn of the year, there were 860,000 domain names registered, a net growth of more than 16,7%. The 900,000th domain name clearly shows that the financial and economic crisis does not withhold the Belgians from registering their domain names.

From all the holders of a .be website 70% are organizations and individuals effectively situated in Belgium. Meaning that hundreds of thousands of Belgians are clearly familiar with .be domain names.

New .CO.NL Go Live

Starting today, April 15, 2009, anyone will be able to register all available .co.nl domains on a “first come, first served” basis, without any restriction or priority rights.

The Go Live is the first moment to register .co.nl names for the low base price only: USD 35. Registrations have a minimum period of only 1 year.

Some names have been reserved by the .co.nl operator for two different reasons:

exclusion of registration for offensive or confusing names

reservation of generic names for future use (“premium” domains)

More Than 8,000 .UZ Domains Registered

The .UZ registered domains have exceeded 8,000.

Registration of new domains has grown 5.5% compared to the beginning of the year: 1,083 new domains were registered, while just 663 domains were removed.

Russia’s .RU Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Russia’s country code top level domain .ru name celebrated its 15th anniversary.

There are currently around 40 million Internet users in Russia and some two million country specific domain names, the Russian Network Information Center said.

“In such a short period, the Internet has gone from an exclusive toy into a phenomenon which has embraced the whole world and is available to every third citizen in the country,” said Mark Tverdynin, who chairs the regional public center for Internet technology, told RIA Novosti.

Russia plans to launch a national domain name .rf Russian Federation written in the Cyrillic script instead of Latin. The domain is aimed at raising the importance of Russian as a global language.

Russian is also the ninth most popular language among Internet users with 38 million people according to data available from the Internet World Stats site.

In November 2008, .rf was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers following a request by President Dmitry Medvedev. The registration process could start by the end of 2009.

.MOBI Domain Registry Reveals The Number of Mobile Websites

The number of mobile websites experiment an accelerated growth. According to the .mobi Domain Registry, last year there were 150.000 mobile websites available. Now the number increases reaching 1.1 million mobile site addresses in the world.

The TLDs that were scanned include domains as .mobi, .com, .net, .uk and .de.

More Than 3 Million .EU Domains Registered

There are now more than 3 million domains under .EU. Even after 3 years, .eu domain has not stopped its growth. It has been named the 5th most popular country code top level domain from the world; the number of .eu domain increased by 2% the first quarter of 2009.

.EU opened on December 2005, but only since April 2006 registration has been open to all EU residents.

Being such a success, Sweden has decided to be the first Member State who chooses .eu for their website dedicated to the Presidency of the European Union.

.CN Domain Authority Releases Report on The Internet Development in China

.CN Domain Authority released the 23rd statistical survey report on the internet development in China in January.

According to the report, by the end of 2008 the Internet penetration rate of 22.6% in China had surpassed the global average level of 21.9% for the first time. Meanwhile, the amount of Internet users in China had reached 298 million (increasing by 41.9% from 2007), with 279 million broadband users.

And the registration number of CN domain names reached 13.572 million. The three indexes continued to rank the first in the world. Besides, the amount of registrations of CN domain names increased by 50.8% from 2007, and the amount of websites under .CN increased by 120.3%.

As an important fundamental resource of the Internet in China, CN domain names have been widely applied in various industries such as finance and automobile.
