The President of Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) inaugurated its Auction committee on December 3, 2008. The committee has the responsibility of fashioning out auction guidelines and procedures for the .ng domain.
This is both for special registrations on the second level like mybank.ng, and also premium domains on the third level, like doctors.com.ng, shop.com.ng, among others.
The work of the committee is expected to herald a new beginning in the utilization of .ng and is expected to submit its final report in early January with the first auctions expected either late January or first week of February.
With domain names being available at varying prices through the auction, the management of NIRA expects this will be a great benefit to all Nigerians wanting a domain name, whether it is paying a premium for a premium domain name, or to get a name for a small business.
.Coop now supports the registration of both single and two character domain names. These special domains can be registered through participating .coop registrar after the sub mission of a brief Expression of Interest and dotCoop approval.
Single character domains include the letters a-z and single digit numerals (0-9). There are still restrictions on 2 character names that are the same as country codes (such as, .us or .de).
The process basically asks those interested in the domains to submit a short memo or Expression of Interest (EOI). Initial EOI will be accumulated for a three month period to ensure equal access during this initial release. Any unique EOIs that meet the general criteria will be approved and can be registered. Any domains with more than one EOI will be evaluated during the three month period and awarded to the eligible registrant that provides the best and highest value of the domain to the cooperative community.
The .nl Registry introduced a 40 day quarantine period, so that all domain names that are cancelled cannot be registered by anyone but its old registrant within that period.
The Registrys main reason for introducing the quarantine system is to give the old registrants an opportunity for reconsidering the cancellation. The quarantine also protects the owner in case a domain is cancelled by accident or mistake, so that third parties are not able to immediately register the domain name.
